You compare devices of different classes - the Price of the ts990s is the half of the IC7851. You tuning of the TS990s is wrong and the Signals sounds higher and is not warm for your ears. The TS990s has got a couple of Tuning capabilities that makes the Sound of the Signal and noisefloor quite smoother. I like this kinda compare's - i had done this before too and did that at my Antenna and Location to find out where the REAL ADVATAGES are, if pay double and i can confirm that they are has not much differences in the Quality of signal reception. You must know the handling of every Transceiver and yues a Signal that is quite Closer to the noisefloor and use everything of the compared rigs that's be able to Receiver that Signal. The best results of both can be compared and you must descide what Kind of singal you like more and how much Tuning you Need to do before you reached that results. Thats a real compare. If you don't know the handling of the capabilieties of the rigs and compare the rigs at Default values, this could not get an usable results. I had decide me to the TS990s because you get more bang for the bucks. The Spectralscope is not so floated like the ic7851 but quite far away from useless and faster as the IC7800. I use them and i find it very helpfull and use them very often. I miss just one feature and this is the transmittion of an previously received signal by the voice Memory and the Decoding of cw Signals. This are just Gadgets - not very important an could be solved by the Firmware because kenwood has implemented the voice-keyer and Audio recoder by Software instead using a discrete voice chip like an ISD.I also would like to have the recepticals for microphone Input and the usb.drive / Keyboard on the backside instead on the frontpanel. All of the highend devices does not have got a IF output for plug-in an external demodulator like an SDR or Spectrumanalyser for further signal analysis. As resume - i am lucky with the decision and after about a year of usage, i am know the handling of them. I am sure that None of qso's where lost reasoned by the decision to got the cheaper rig. by the way - iif the entire RIG-Setup of the TS8990s and The IC7851 was done by the owner, the Sound would be similar on both rigs. The main difference is between those highend rigs are quite quite low and you can notice them in very extreme circumstances, that normaly not occurs. Incredible radios... I would be happy if I had at least an Yaesu FT-897d... but I'm saving money to buy a FT-991 at the end of this year... Hope I can get it, my firts HF multiband radio. I'd stay far far away from that one at all costs but it's your money.I decided on a New ICOM 7600 & by far it's the best radio I've ever owned or operated & I learn something new about it almost every day & it's all good I promise.The V.@.0 firmware update made the ICOM 7600 even a better radio & it was already AWESOME! {:>)

This comparison is ridiculous on so many levels. To begin with, Icom is two times more expensive than Kenwood; let’s continue this trend and compare a BMW and a Toyota Corolla)). Most importantly, ham radio is a hobby and it’s meant to bring joy to YOUR SOUL. Interractions with the rig is a part of that joy. If, due to circumstances, I have a soft spot for Kenwood since childhood, I WILL choose TS990; also, two displays is a BIG plus to me; price is acceptable (by today’s standards). To me personally, IC-7851 is like a super-model - tall and beautiful, but cold and out of my league; so, why even think about her and COMPARE her to the sweetest girl next door, who has the best smile in the world, pretty as hell (did I mention her cute little butt?) and who is not against going with me to the movies?! That girl will make me happy, and that’s what is most important; I DON’T CARE if she’s not perfect (neither am I!) This comparison also reminds me of never-ending arguments about Nikon and Cannon. My soul wanted a Nikon, and I enjoy the camera - screw the arguments! Both cameras ase so good, neither will let you down as a photografer; pick one, enjoy the hobby, stop comparing/doubting/salivating,... and waisting your time.
Sorry but you are not tuning the cw stations for a 750-800 hz tone, it does not sound like you are using the same filtering and or passband, and it does not sound like you have the radios set-up with the equivalent rf gain. No serious cw operator tunes in cw to sound that way. All that aside, thanks for the demo anyway. I don't own either rig, but it's difficult to compare these two rigs when the feature set and price point is so diverse. I was disappointed in the Kenwood 990 for two deal-killer reasons...the band scope is not real time and there is no digital video output in the rear in the event the owner wants to send video to a larger display. That's a real disappointment from a so-called flagship rig. Even at 12 grand, the Icom is a lot more radio and that's hard for me to say since I have usually gravitated to Kenwood.

First of all... over $5000.00 price difference. I think the kenwwod tunes in better than it was in this video. My TS-590 sounds better than the 990 here. HMMM a little favoritism?
Not when 4K gets you an elecraft k4. Icon is massively overpriced and the Kenwood is overpriced. Not to mention the crappy Japanese auto tuners. After 3:2 they melt down. Elecraft can tune a paper clip. :)
Onestly , I belive , it is not possible to compare a cheaper 6,500 euro transceiver than a 13,000 transceiver -.... I suggest you to compare the IC 7851 with a AEG E 1800 . Challange would be more correct

Also, use the same speaker for both radios. Different speakers have different "sweet spots". And use the same Hz tone for each radio. This test is not equal in those aspects.
The boasts and claims of superiority below are meaningless noise. Amateur radios reached relative parity around 1980 . Dare I say- If you took 3 HF Radios to Dayton 2019 - Radio 1 A Kenwood TS_830 - Radio 2 a Yaesu FT-2000 and Radio 3 (Either of these radios the 7851 OR the 990)l- Place said radios each under a separate Black Box. Hang the same antenna off an RF Splitter and feed line- and label the Black Boxes Radio 1,, 2 and 3. - With receivers in a FLAT mode- No band pass filters/NB/NR or other signal processing - 3 Sets of Head Phones - 3 hams listening at once as the radios all tuned to the same signal are flipped from Radio 1 to 2 to 3-- I’m betting that few hams could identify what signal came from which radio.- Yes some radios have more selective receivers and SDR architecture is superior in an evolutionary advance- But the performance differences are minor, in my view. Radio sensitivity and signal/noise rejection has improved. Filters, NR, and NB are what makes new radios way superior in pulling out a weak signal out of the mud. Can you use an older radio? Absolutely, but don't kid yourself into thinking radios have not greatly improved over the years. The introduction of the scope and waterfall allows for quick tuning to signals across bands in an instant. Now how they sound is something that can debated about. Every radio sounds different. Same headphones or speaker and it comes down to preference, but if you can't hear the signal due to noise then it really doesn't matter.
The IC-7851 is better than the TS-990S Even the APF is better on the IC-7851 NB & NR much better on IC7851 Spectrum Scope & WaterFall far superior on IC-7851 versus TS-990S

CW can be heard better with IC-7851. What a difference!

Wow, the 7851 bests the 990...and you can see that the spectrum display is Much faster in the Icom...that's huge.
Use NB2 and APF on the Kenwood and it will outperform the IC..;-)
